Class 4T of the Year 2000

Evans Park Elementary School is located in Pearl River in Rockland County, New York.  The elememtary school currently teaches grades kindergarten to fourth.

This year, I had the privilege to teach 26 wonderful children in my fourth grade class.  Although a challenge to be teaching so many children in one class, it has turned out to be a very special year.

There are 13 boys and 13 girls in our fourth grade classroom.  We occupy classroom #1, which is at the end of the main hallway, last class on the right.  Each child has a very different style and personality, but together we form a very special family.  Upon entering our class, you will not only see a lot of learning taking place, but you will also hear a lot of laughter and giggles throughout every lesson.

In terms of curriculum, this year's topics so far have included New York History, multiplication and division along with problem solving, water and space units and we will never forget the much anticipated ELA Exam.  We have read some wonderful books so far including Summer of the Swans, Trouble River, The Pinballs, Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone and The Winter of the Red Snow.  This year's class was the first to experience our new classroom computers, along with teaching tower, where the students were able to research using the Internet.  Where will computers and education be 20 years from now?

Some special events that we participated in this year include our three-day Winter Solstice Festival, our Harry Potter Tea Party where we made trifle and drank tea and biscuits, just like the English do.  We also thoroughly enjoyed researching the American Revolution and participating in various activities centered around this theme.  The year is only half over and there are still many more events we will explore.

I love teaching (this is my 6th year teaching, 3rd at Evans Park).  I hope my students remember me as they move on and grow into mature adults.  I hope they remember the nicknames they each had, the silly words we used like "bubble nose" and "chicken feet."  One of their most favorite games to play was "Imitate Miss Tomkins."  I don't always realize the impact I have on students or what stands out in their minds about me until I saw them in action.  My most memorable moment with this class was when they had a "surprise" 30th birthday for me.  Thay had been planning it for over two months.  I knew about it before hand, but played along with the surprise.  It was so touching to see the effort and excitement they put into my special day, not to mention the thrilling expressions on their faces that as much as said, "We fooled you, Miss Tomkins." Although they didn't fool me, they touched my heart in a way that is beyond expressing in words.

My first 2000 class will always be a special class to me.   I hope the next 20 years are kind to us all and I look forward to being there 20 years from now, looking back, reminiscing, and sharing some very special moments together.

February 27, 2000

Dear Class,

As I am writing this letter I am thinking about the few months that we have just spent together.  I have only been your teacher since after Thanksgiving break, but I feel that I know all of you very well.   You are a great group of children.  Every one of you have a lot of positive qualities.  I hope that when we all open this time capsule together, in or around the year 2020, we will have among us 25 successful adults.  I know That I will be proud of the adults you will have become.

My wish for all of you is for a very happy personal life and a successful work life.  I hope that some of you have stayed in touch with each other, although many times, even when people want to stay in touch, they wind up going their separate ways.  I hope that some of you, even if you have not kept in touch, will renew your friendships because of this reunion.  Think back and remember the fourth grade.  Many of you were quite close with others in this class.

You truly were a really nice group of children and I expect to find a really special group of adults at this reunion.  I hope all of you are here to share what could be a very exciting reunion.  I hope I am able to be here to share this moment with you.

Sincerely

Mrs. Rudnitsky
